Here are my views for those who track the Dexter tag. Spoilers after the jump.
It’s plain to see why they have complicated Deb and Dexter’s relationship, the moment they shared at the crime scene where travis was hiding was awkward, awkward for Deb and the audience. I think they changed their relationship to really nail the “everything isn’t so black and white,” Which is a belief that Deb has long held. The set up was too avoid the classic season 2 scene where Deb shoots him in the head. With the help of the therapist, Deb has learned to stand on her own two feet, but Dexter is the foundation she’s built on (strange metaphor)
So Season 7 will pick up, like season 4-5 did, straight after the fact and I’m assuming Deb will go into meltdown mode and Dexter will try to comfort her, but she’ll be disgusted and avoid contact, this is at the church I’m assuming. It will be a difficult scene for the writers, and they’ll really have to nail it.
I feel that they need to move away from DDK/Travis as fast as possible, as great as this season has been, the religions tones and general theme of the season is draining on the audience I think.
The Louis plot is cheap, I didn’t realize until now, it’s plain now that they never intended to resolve the plot line, it may develop into a great plot line in Season 7, but it shows that even the writers don’t have faith in their ability to keep the audience’s attention between seasons.
Quin and La Guerta are fucking messes, the writers have written themselves into a corner with them, I’m getting a bit tired of hating/liking/hating/liking La Guerta and I’m sick of Quin being a stereotypical douche. Maybe Batista’s threat will pull him into line, but I doubt it.
I’ll be happy if Batista becomes captain, as unrealistic as it seems, it will resolve the traditional Batista/Deb dynamic which is a great thing. Deb may even step down as lieutenant using the stress of the DDK murders as an excuse, when in reality it’s because she’ll have no strength given what happened with Dexter.
I could write more, but I’ll end it here.
We’re moving into dangerous Dexter territory here, I never saw Season 6 as “shark-jumping” but it’s getting to that point. I pray they never sink as low as Season 5, and the problem with ending with a great twist, is that you have to clean the mess up in the next season. The writing of Season 6 was great, maybe, even better than Season 4, it’s clear they care more about developing characters and have paid more attention to continuity now. The subsequent seasons will be more character based and introspective, there literally can’t be another serial killer in Miami.
One last thing, does anyone else see the similarity between Anderson and Quin? Quin didn’t do too much in Season 3, but became a major character, Anderson hasn’t done much in Season 6, will he become the great character we all want him to be?
Any observations about the things I’ve missed?
